Safer Gambling

Gambling is legal for UK adults but it is capable of causing real financial, psychological and relational harm. This page sets out the tools and services available to UK players, including everything we cover in more detail across the site. If you are struggling now, please skip to the professional support section further down.

If you need to talk to someone now

National Gambling Helpline: 0808 8020 133. Free from any UK phone. Twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year.

Everyday safer-gambling habits

Most gambling-related harm develops gradually rather than in a single dramatic event. Everyday habits are the most effective place to intervene. Set a deposit limit before you make your first deposit, not after. Set a session-time reminder that pops up at least every hour. Never gamble with money you have earmarked for anything else. Do not use credit — the fact that UKGC-licensed sites cannot accept credit-card deposits is a good reason to observe the same rule at offshore operators, even where they still accept them.

If you notice yourself increasing stakes to chase losses, extending sessions to try to recover, gambling to escape difficult feelings, or hiding losses from people close to you, treat that as a signal to take a break. These are common early indicators of a developing problem and they respond well to early attention.

Self-exclusion and blocking tools

GamStop is the UK's national self-exclusion register for UKGC-licensed operators. Registration takes about ten minutes at gamstop.co.uk and blocks new UK-licensed accounts for six months, one year, or five years. See our self-exclusion guide for the full mechanics and the important caveats about offshore casinos being outside the scheme's technical scope.

Gamban is a paid device-level blocker that prevents access to gambling sites including offshore ones. It runs on phones, tablets and computers. GamCare provides it free to people using its counselling services.

BetBlocker is a free, charity-run alternative to Gamban with similar coverage. Both can be run in parallel for redundancy.

Bank-level blocks are available from every UK retail bank via their mobile app. Once engaged, most bank blocks include a cooling-off delay of one to two days before the block can be lifted, which is where the effectiveness lies.

Professional support in the UK

  • GamCare: free, confidential counselling by phone, email and live chat at gamcare.org.uk.
  • BeGambleAware: a directory of local face-to-face support at begambleaware.org.
  • Gambling Therapy: free online support and multilingual counselling at gamblingtherapy.org.
  • Gordon Moody: residential treatment for severe gambling addiction at gordonmoody.org.uk.
  • NHS Gambling Clinics: specialist NHS treatment via GP referral. Details at nhs.uk.

None of these services will judge you and all of them are used to helping people whose situation feels unmanageable. The first conversation is usually the hardest step. What follows is almost always more manageable than it looks from the outside.

Support for people affected by someone else's gambling

Gambling harm affects not only the person gambling. If you are worried about a partner, family member or friend, several services offer specific support. GamCare's helpline covers concerned others alongside people gambling directly. Gam-Anon runs peer-support groups for family and friends. Both are free and confidential.
